Easton's ears

Many of you know that Easton has had recurrent ear infections for the past several months. They have been very resistant to antibiotics, causing not only ongoing discomfort for him, but also ongoing and repeated exposure to antibiotics. We saw an ENT last week and made the decision to have tubes put in his ears. The surgery was yesterday, and he did great. They decided to remove his adenoids as they looked chronically inflamed. The adenoids are located at the base of the eustascian tubes; if the adenoids are infected, the infection can move up those tubes into the ear. At the time of the surgery, both ears were full of pus. That was drained and suctioned before the tubes were placed.

The surgery was performed at an outpatient surgery center, so we avoided the hassle of the hospital. The procedure was very quick, and after speaking with the surgeon, Evan and I were taken back to him just as he was coming out of anesthesia. He was very disoriented and unhappy for awhile. Once they took the IV out of his foot and we took him outside, he was much happier. He was a bit fussy yesterday, but he slept for 13 hours overnight.

Now the great part: he is already a different kid. He is noticeably happier. His walking is much more stable ... and he is now running. (Since your equilibrium is in your ears, balance can be effected by ear infections.) This little guy has had chronic pain and blockage in his ears for months, and it is suddenly relieved.

We have to keep water out of his ears and keep antibiotic drops in them for several days. We will have a recheck with the ENT in two weeks, but from what we are seeing so far, he is doing great.
