Ella, the birthday gangster
Ella turned 2 on Sunday. We can hardly believe that the tiny pink bundle we brought home what seems like yesterday is now an actual little girl – not a baby anymore! While there are winsome moments of sad nostalgia for the sweet baby she was, we so enjoy her right now – stubborn, iron will and all. She is super smart and really funny, and there is never a dull moment around here when she is awake.
We celebrated her birthday in several ways. Evan started a sweet tradition this year. He plans to buy her roses each year for her birthday – one for each year of her life. He came home Friday afternoon with two perfect pale pink roses in a little glass vase. Ella promptly tried to rip the petals off, but she also though they smelled pretty good. They are now on display – and out of reach – on the mantel. I told him he is a sweet daddy, and that he might rethink this plan when she is turning 40 – that will be lots of roses!!
Saturday was her party. One set of grandparents, one great and great uncle, two aunts, one uncle, and (most importantly) three cousins showed up for pizza, cupcakes, swimming, and an all around good time. She got some great gifts, and the kids had a great time playing together.
Sunday was pretty low key. We gave her a few more gifts; one of our gifts was crawl through tunnel we found last month at Ikea. Ella and Easton both had a good time with that. We continued our family tradition of chocolate chip birthday pancakes, but the weather was really bad and we were exhausted from Saturday’s events, so we stuck close to home and had a quiet birthday and Mother’s Day.
The “big” gift this year is a swing set that is “in progress” in the back yard. I’ll post pictures as it comes together. This thing is mammoth, but Evan is committed to the task.

Okay, this comment is somewhat random and out of the blue but...it's your old friend, Sarah Mattingly (formerly Moss). It's been what, 6 years since we've seen each other and you've been coming to my mind lately so I did a little "google" searching and I found your family's blog (amazing what technology can do for us!) Hi from Fayetteville! Since we've been gone so long on our trip, it was fun to check your blog again and see the new cute pictures of our oh-so-cute grandchildren. Sorry we had to miss that party! Maybe we can come and play on the new swingset one of these days!
